Isotopes

There are four isotopic atoms that are available for use in MSC Pro 5: deuterium, carbon-13, nitrogen-15 and oxygen-18.  The latter three may be interchanged by selecting them from the atom palette (the isotopes other than deuterium are on Page 3).   Isotopes are added to a structure in the same manner as any other atom, by selecting from the palette and clicking on an atom to be replaced.  Because MSC handles hydrogen by default except when you add an explicit hydrogen directly, deuterium is not available as a replacement atom, but it can be selected from the structure palette  (--D), and then added to the structure as a 'group' (which replaces a hydrogen), similar to the Hydrogen button.  Isotopic atoms in a structure are drawn in green (or the color specified in Preferences) to distinguish them from the native atoms, and are listed separately with an asterisk in the elemental composition list.
