NIST Library and MSC Pro 5.1

MSC Pro 5.1 has been designed to interact directly with the NIST library if that library is available to you.  To use the links you should first make certain that the NIST Library option is checked on the MSC  Preferences | Startup Options page (Page 1).  This option was activated by default when you installed MSC.   When the Library option is on, an additional Speedbutton labeled NIST will appear on the Toolbars in both the main MSC window and in Spectrum.  You should confirm that the PATHS to NIST Tools boxes are correct.  The paths are listed on page 2 of Preferences.  If necessary, they can be edited directly, or by using the Browse buttons to locate and select the correct directory.

Clicking the NIST button on the main window in MSC Pro will send the current structure to the NIST Library and immediately initiate a structure search.  The NIST program window will be activated and the search results will be displayed.  The NIST program can take several seconds to load when it is first started.  When you are finished with evaluating the structure in the NIST program you can either minimize or close it to return to MSC Pro.  Minimizing it usually will provide quicker response times for subsequent calls..

The NIST button on the Spectrum page is similar in that it will send the currently displayed mass spectrum to the NIST Library for a spectral search.  The NIST program will be activated, initiate a search, and display the results as before.  When Spectrum has been called from the Autofragmentation results window AND a comparison spectrum is loaded in the Spectrum window, then you can also access the NIST Mass Spectral Interpretation routine on the Evaluate menu.  See the NIST Mass Spec Interpreter section on the NIST Spectrum topic page below for more information on that.
