Separate Structures

In MSC the default behavior is for each successive structure or atom to be merged with its nearest atomic neighbor(s).  Thus, if you draw a ring structure, for example, and then add a second ring, the atoms of the second ring will automatically merge with their nearest neighbors in the original ring to form the new, merged compound.

In some cases, you may want to add a new structure as an isolated entity without having it merge with previous objects.  To do this, you should hold down the <Shift> key while adding the new object.  This process is referred to elsewhere as a <Shift>-Click.  The <Shift>-key only has to be down when the mouse button is released, so you can locate the new object as desired in the drawing region, and then press and hold the <Shift>-key as you release the mouse button to lock the new object in its current position.
